We work with several herb and spice companies to source materials and develop our methods and have built models for herbs and spice authenticity by collecting and analysing hundreds of known authentic samples (and also many of their known potential adulterants) from around the world.

This allows us to create models that include a number of different authentic samples, as well as the various potential adulterants. We then validate the models by testing authentic samples spiked with known adulterants, typically starting from 10% as our minimum spike level, as our test is aimed at Economically Motivated Adulteration (EMA). The validation process allows us to assess the robustness of the models built.

Spectroscopy is used to gather sample data or ‘fingerprints’; chemometrics is used to compare that data to a model. We can then interpret authenticity from the model output. We add value in the development of leading chemometric modelling. We use spectroscopy in conjunction with chemometrics to analyse food ingredients samples in the fight against food fraud with non-targeted analysis.
