Bia Analytical Ltd have an exciting employment opportunity for a Laboratory Technician to work as part of the team developing methods for food authenticity testing in their Belfast labs. This position is initially part-time (basic contract working minimum of 20 hours per week) however due to business needs this could lead to a full-time role.

Bia Analytical is a spin-out company from the world-leading Institute of Global Food Security, Queen's University Belfast. Bia Analytical specialises in food authenticity testing and have developed novel laboratory-based food authenticity testing services using spectroscopy and chemometric model interpretation to test the authenticity of a range of food products. Our services are helping protect the global food supply chain against food fraud.

SALARY: £20,000 per year pro rata

HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT: 8 bank holidays + 25 floating days (pro rata)

REPORT TO: Research Scientists


  1. On consultation with line manager, plan own day-to-day research support activities including laboratory experiments, sample analysis and building databases.
  2. Logging of sample details.
  3. Perform sample preparation.
  4. Perform analysis of samples, under ISO 17025, and report results to appropriate personnel.
  5. Carry out routine administrative duties as requested.
  6. Carry out any other duties designated by a line manager and which fall within the general ambit of the post.
  7. Work as part of a team to deliver results to meet deadlines.
  8. Maintain, tidy and organise workspaces and sample storage areas.
  9. Liaise with staff over equipment and safety issues.
  10. Monitor and report on materials inventory and equipment to line manager.
  11. Maintain laboratory records to ISO 17025 standards.
  12. Instrument calibration and maintenance as required.
  13. Acquiring knowledge of job-related protocols and completion of the mandatory training as required.

Essential Criteria

  1. Minimum of 8 GCSE's (Grades C and above) including a science subject
  2. Demonstrate a strong work ethic and self-motivation.
  3. Excellent communication and organisational skills
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft software, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  5. Ability to work as part of a team
  6. Show excellent attention to detail
  7. Flexible approach to change

Desirable Criteria

  1. Science background
  2. Experience of working in a laboratory environment
  3. A-levels including a science subject (grade C and above)
